5 tips for crushing your wellness goals in 2023

Are you ready to crush your wellness goals in the coming year?

Over the past few weeks, you might have been thinking about what wellness goals you would like to achieve in the new year. If you are new to the process or tired of not reaching them, you are in luck.

To help you make 2023 your healthiest year yet, I am sharing a few tips to help you not only reach your goals, but to crush them.

The following tips will help simplify the process and can be applied to any wellness goal. Feel free to use some or all of them. Let’s go!

5 Wellness goal tips

Tip #1: Find your “why.”

Before beginning your journey, take the time to think about the reason you are setting this wellness goal. Establishing your “Why” will:

  • keep you motivated
  • help you persevere through difficult moments and setbacks
  • limit distractions from getting in the way of your goals

When writing your “why,” dig deep and be specific about the reason. WHY do you want to do this?

I want to lose 20 pounds. –> I want to lose 20 pounds because I want to have more energy during the day.

I want to banish my burnout. –> I want to banish my burnout so I can enjoy spending time with my family without thinking about work.

After you establish your “why,” place it somewhere where you will see it often for maximum benefit.

Tip #2: Start small.

A simple goal is easier to create, do and maintain compared to a longer, more complicated one.

While you should not make the goal too easy, it should be realistic. Create the goal based on skills you already have and things you have already achieved. Consider using the SMART goals framework to get started.

For example, if I was new to running, I would not have a goal of running a marathon in 6 months. I probably would not be successful in that time frame because I would need more time and experience to prepare for that. A more reasonable goal to start with would be to run one mile a day 2 times a week for the next 4 weeks.

Keep in mind that your goal is not completely set in stone. If you find your goal too easy, feel free to make adjustments throughout the process.

Tip #3: Stay consistent.

If you want to reach your wellness goals, you must be consistent. Remember that a little bit of work done everyday is still work toward your goal.

Developing consistency will help you turn the work into a habit and increase your discipline. When the work becomes a part of your daily routine, it becomes easier to complete, especially on the days you are lacking motivation.

Ideally, your goal should become a priority and have a dedicated time slot.

Don’t have a large block of time to do the work? Consider dividing the tasks amongst several blocks of time during your day.

Being consistent will also help you when you experience setbacks. Instead of dwelling on your failure and giving up, your consistency can help you get back on track and continue working toward your goal.

Tip #4: Develop an accountability system.

Many people fail to reach their goals due to the lack of accountability.

For the best results, use a system to track your progress and keep you working towards your goal. Some examples are:

  • Create a checklist on paper.
  • Make it a daily task on your calendar.
  • Put money in a jar when you finish the task.

Do whatever is going to help you stay on track! See more ideas here.

Tip #5: Have an “after” plan.

After you achieve your goal, what’s next? Often, many people do not have a plan to help them maintain the results after reaching their goal.

For example, people who lose a lot of weight often gain some of the weight back because they do not continue the same habits that helped them reach their goal in the first place.

As you approach your goal, develop a maintenance plan so you can enjoy your success for years, not months!

Summary

If you have or are planning to set wellness goals this year, finding your “why,” starting small, staying consistent, developing an accountability system and having an “after” plan can positively impact your goals.

Using some or all of the tips can help you achieve your desired outcome.
