Congrats your decision to compete! If you have not already, read my story about how I got into body building and my list of ten things you should know before you compete. Aside from the training and diet, there are a few other tools you need. Check out the list below for things you will definitely need and my must haves for a successful prep!

Things you need

Here are 8 competition prep must-haves for success! I have included some of the products I currently use (contain affiliate links).

Kitchen scale.

It is extremely important to keep track of the exact amount of food that is going into your body since you are trying to maintain a calorie deficit to achieve a specific rate of weight loss. Guessing your portions may affect your deficit.

Multivitamin.

Prep diets tend to exclude certain foods, such as fruit. Adding in a multivitamin can help fill the nutrient gaps. Your coach might recommend you take other supplements as well. During prep, I normally add magnesium, vitamin C and ashwagandha.

A support system.

Competition prep is a stressful time both physically and mentally. Having that support will prevent you from eating that package of Oreos when your coach said you didn’t need a refeed.

A large water bottle.

You will be drinking plenty. Also make sure there’s a bathroom nearby at all times.

Sports massage therapy.

Prep is physically demanding on the body. Massage therapy can help your body recover more quickly and prevent injuries.

Caffeine.

Whether its coffee or pre-workout, you’re going to need it. Trust me.

Weight scale.

It is the easiest way to track your weight loss.

Journal/app to record weight and meals.

You will need to track your weight everyday to monitor your progress, especially after any diet adjustments. You can also use it to plan meals if you track macros. I use a combination of both. For more journaling tips, check out this post.
